Transforming the Design of the University of Illinois

IGW Architecture led a team of architects, landscape architects, and interpretive designers in developing a heritage master plan for the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The project was an outgrowth of the desire to articulate and celebrate the proud history, tradition, and spirit of intercollegiate athletics at the university.

Envisioned was a phased transformation of the existing University of Illinois athletic campus into a unique and exciting destination for students, faculty, alums, residents, and tourists. A playful environment of interior and exterior spaces will be created to provide an array of opportunities for visitors to enjoy and become a part of the Illinois athletic tradition. Unifying architectural elements, landscape features, activity areas, and exhibits will guide visitors intuitively through the campus.

Visitors will also appreciate the university's long-standing commitment to the total individual and gain a richer understanding of the power of sports to unite people of different ages and backgrounds in pursuit of common goals, ideals, and loyalties.
