IGW provided comprehensive planning, design and construction phase services to the Urbana School District 116 for the expansion and renovation of Leal Elementary, a neighborhood school located in Urbana, Illinois. Originally built in 1936 as part of the WPA in Art Deco style, a 20,000 square foot addition was designed to accommodate new classrooms for grades 3-5, a library-media center, cafeteria, and computer lab.
The existing 45,800 square foot building was completely renovated including the reconfiguration of instructional, administrative and support space and the restoration or replacement of all original building materials, finishes and mechanical-electrical systems. Full compliance with accessibility and life safety codes was achieved with new entrance ramps, the addition of an elevator and existing stairwell modifications. Site improvements included a new receiving area, improved bus drop-off and expanded staff and visitor parking.
